Delmar's Medical Transcription Handbook
Published in Paperback by Delmar Learning (14 November, 1997)
Author: Rachelle S. Blake
Average review score:

Before buying this book.
I wish I had known this book must be used with Delmar's Medical Transcription Handbook. I was under the impression that it would be more like HPI's Medical Transcription Workbook. I am studying for Part 2 (practical)of the CMT exam and was hoping this would be helpful. This book takes basic to a new level. One of the questions is "Describe the difference between rewind and review, the fast forward and cue." If you are still interested, you need to be aware that the answers are not included.

The Best MT Book You Can Own
Except for texts such as Dorland's, Drug Indexes, etc., this is probably the best MT book you can get. It is not only a course in itself (it needs to be used in conjunction with the workbook of the same name) but is a useful reference for as long as you work in medical transcription. With self discipline (you need that to work at home anyway) you can make this book substitute for just about any tech college or correspondence course in the subject.

Excellent choice for newbies and oldies for honing skills.
This book is an excellent condensed resource book for basic generalized information specific to Medical Transcription. There are breakdowns of words, terminology, tests an exercises for skill building. It is basically a text book used apparently for Medical Transcription. I would recommend it highly for anyone going into this field or returning to it

The Guilt-Free Dog Owner's Guide: Caring for a Dog When You're Short on Time and Space
Published in Paperback by Storey Books (April, 1990)
Authors: Diana Delmar, Pate Lawson, and Ben Watson
Average review score:

Huh???????
If you're short on time and space, then DON'T GET A DOG!!!!!!!!! Rescue organizations around the country will thank you. If you don't have the time to devote to the proper care of a dog, then you are just asking for trouble by getting one. Please think twice.

A book for people living on planet earth
This book is in my top 5 of doggie books. If you work, and even if you don't, read this book. The writer lives on planet earth with the rest of us and our dogs. I wish I'd read it first and I may not have needed the 48 of the 50 others I read also. My dog has been saved. It turned back into a normal dog, and I once again live a normal life, after I followed the recommendations in this very easy to read book. It gives some very valuable insights into how to care for your dog on planet earth. The writer should be congratulated for promoting responsible dog ownership. Most writers are too busy promoting themselves.

A responsible book for people willing to make the effort
I got this book in 94 or 95 and ultimately it changed my life. Previously I had thought, as a full-time worker in a rented house, I could not offer a home to any of the many unwanted dogs in the UK. This book encouraged me to look at the possibilities - arrange a neighbour to come to the house at lunchtime - ask the landlords nicely, having arranged 3rd party insurance for the dog - find out what dogs *were* happy to sleep in the day - arrange walks and training and toys for them when I was there - how to avoid separation anxiety - that sort of thing. I now have a middleaged retired racing greyhound and an elderly Whippet and foster retired (2 years old and up!) racing greyhounds. And somewhere down the line, dogs lives are saved. The book is realistic about dog ownership - the poo, the pee, the vomit, the hair, the chewed things, the barking, the exercise whatever the weather - and makes you face up to it. I would recommend it to *all* prospective dog owners, whether short of time & space or not - the quiz at the start on "whether you are suited" (q: the dog comes racing through the living room with your underwear in its mouth. Do you a) scold the dog b) laugh and do nothing c) gently take it from the dog, praise it, and remind yourself not to leave it on the bedroom floor in future?)

Goof-Proof Interviews
Published in Paperback by LearningExpress (April, 2003)
Authors: Delmar Publishers and Felice Primeau Devine
Average review score:

Don't waste your time or money
If you never have interviewed for a career level position, you may find this book helpful. However, if you have been working for a while, most of the information is obvious at best. Some of the rules include, brush your teeth, shower, wear clean clothes, use deodorant, don't be late to your interview. There was some useful information, such as some of the more popular questions asked at interviews. But that information is contained in virtually every job interview book. I did not give it one star because someone early in their career path, may find this book helpful.

I was very disappointed with this book. Unfortunately, I purchased the Goof-Proof Resumes book too, when I am done I will review it.

Perfect for today's job market
This is the first career guide I've read that offers simple, realistic advice without distractions or bouts of self-important longwindedness. Most books leave out the important parts leading up to the interview, from researching the company to choosing what to wear. These days, much of the conventional wisdom regarding interviewing has been turned upside-down. With so many conflicting viewpoints out there, it's great to find rules that are current, cohesive--and most important--correct.

ASE Test Prep Series -- Automobile (A2): Automotive Transmissions and Transaxles
Published in Paperback by Delmar Learning (31 January, 2001)
Authors: Delmar/Thomson Learning and Delmar

ASE Test Prep Series -- Automobile (A2): Automotive Transmis
I found this book very poor in that there are numerous typographical errors, cross referances to non existing paragraphs and referances from the sample test questions to paragraphs that had no information that pertained to the question! The book does not appear to have been proof read at all and was of poor quality and limited content. I would stay away from this book if you are taking the ASE certification test as it was not as helpfull as I expected.

Excellent Guides
All the Delmar ASE test prep books for Automotive/Light Duty exams are excellent! I answered at least 90% of the questions correctly on every exam for which I used the Delmar guides. As an automotive instructor, I recommend this guide to all my students who plan to take the ASE Automotive exams, and I use some questions from the guides in making my own exams for class. Great study guide!!!

Delmar's Fundamental & Advanced Nursing Skills
Published in Paperback by Delmar Publishers (August, 2003)
Author: Gaylene Altman
Average review score:

New book with needed corrections
This is a wonderful text for students in the entry level of nursing. However, many skills listed in the text are missing information or have conflicting information from the hardcover text also published by Delmar. I have used this text for 2 entry level courses and both courses have noted missing, incomplete or inaccurate data that will need to be updated, corrected and/or assimilated to correspond with the Fundamentals text that is designed as a corresponding text with this book.

clinical skills resuscitation....
This tome of timely tips is in truth a fairly comprehensive textbook/clinical lab manual with detailed skills descriptions, including photos and illustrations. The anecdotal patient stories are a bit much (truth is always stranger than fiction, particularly the lady drowning in the instant quicksand of a punctured therapeutic sand bed...) but on the whole, this is a comprehensive clinical manual in a very readable format. Designed for the ADN 2-year, 3-year RN, or CNA/RN programs.

3ds max 4 Quick Reference
Published in Paperback by Delmar Learning (06 September, 2001)
Authors: Michele Bousquet and Delmar Publishers
Average review score:

Lots of Tutorials
This book is full of tutorials and is not really what I would call a "Quick Reference". I had to buy it for my max class, but I learned at least as much by doing the tutorials on the free version of 3ds max called "gmax".

ASE Test Prep Series -- Automobile (A6): Automotive Electrical-Electronics Systems

A6 Test study guide
The book has several faults, no answers for questions, wrong or left out wiring diagram information. The book just does not reflect the true ASE test.

Merriam Webster's Medical Desk Dictionary
Published in Paperback by Delmar Learning (29 August, 2001)
Authors: Delmar, Merriam-Webster, and Roger W., Jr. Pease
Average review score:

A not so great investment
I have taught allied health students for years and I can say that I was most disappointed with this book. It is surprising that Delmar Learning, who claim to be such a leader in health textbooks, would put their name on something this miserable. The terms are largely out of date, definitions are badly written, there are no illustrations and students (who apparently this is designed for) would find a hard time using this book. I hate to be so negative but in a word IT IS AWFUL!

Not my favorite medical dictionary/manual.
This was the first medical dictionary I got while in medical school. Since I was in there for Neuroscience and not to get an MD. perhaps my area of speciality was too limited for those who would usually use this dictionary. It was extremely frustrating to look up things such as encephalocele and find either no information or very little information. I decided that as a dictionary of medical terminology, books such as this cannot be limited to the concise words given in other dictionaries. There were too many times I was reading or writing medical papers in which I had to put this particular version down and look up the information I needed either at school or on the Internet. When you are in a hurry, you don't have time to do either of those things and prefer to have something you can just flip open alphabetically and get the answer you were looking for. I realize someone put a lot of work into this, but it just isn't enough and I have since gotten another dictionary to which I regularly refer. It isn't this one. Karen Sadler Science Education, University of Pittsburgh

Great Dictionary!
Medicine is not my field, but I have had no problems in understanding medical terms with this dictionary, ranging from simple words like "drive" from a medical point of view, including Ct-Scan, to the strangest words for the laymen. It should be useful for a wide range of professionals working in health care. A very fine presentation!

ASE Test Prep Series -- Automobile (X1): Exhaust Systems
Published in Paperback by Delmar Learning (31 January, 2001)
Authors: Delmar and Delmar/Thomson Learning
Average review score:

Just took the ASE X1 Test.
I just took the X1 test for Exhaust Systems from ASE. Without giving away the content of the test, the Delmar Study Guide is a medium grade preparation book with shallow explanations.

There are sections in the X1 ASE test that the Study Guide did not discuss. The subjects the Study Guide does discuss are repeated multiple times and are only good for engraining the content to memory from repetition of reading the same subject over and over. This same repetition however, tires the reader and gives a loss of interest in the book.

Explanations of Secondary AIR systems are incomplete. The Study Guide refers to the AIR Bypass Valve and the AIR Diverter Valve as one in the same. The Study Guide also advises that increasing exhaust pipe diameter 1/4" to 1/2" over stock is an acceptable modification to improve engine performance, which is true as this modification lowers exhaust backpressure, however the Study Guide neglects to inform the reader that this modification may increase spark knock as Positive Backpressure EGR valves require exhaust backpressure to open the EGR valve. There is also evidence of poor proof reading of the book by the author or publisher as the self-test example questions in section six have two sets of questions that are repeated word for word.

The self-test example questions in sections five and six do have their version of the correct answer for each question with an explanation as to why each possible answer (multiple choice) is correct or incorrect. I found this the most enjoyable reading, as some of their answers were incorrect to their own questions. For example, in one question, a catalytic converter is blue showing signs of overheating; this could be caused by rich fuel management, or a plugged fuel filter. Their answer was C for both are correct, and their reason why is that a rich condition provides excessive HC in the exhaust, which is true, and a plugged fuel filter would lean out the engine causing excessive HC in the exhaust, that is incorrect. A lean condition, if ignited, would have low HC, high O2 and high NOx, usually accompanied with spark knock. If the lean were greater, misfire would occur and would pump HC, or unburned fuel into the exhaust, which could overheat the catalytic converter. This was not explained in the Study Guide.

I wonder if the authors of this book have taken the X1 test themselves, and I doubt they were technicians.

Trucking: Tractor-Trailer Driver Handbook/Workbook
Published in Paperback by Delmar Publishers (January, 2003)
Authors: Delmar Learning and Career Publishing
Average review score:

poor edit skills
This book has some huge errors. The writting in this text seems as if a differant person wrote every paragraph. As an instructor, this is very frustrating. I've had many a student request the chance to string the writer up by the neck. For example, it asks to discribe a van body but has no discription of it in the book. Trust me, I've looked. It also displays insulated and petro tankers, and then proceeds to label them incorrectly. I beleive, either the writter is a little slow in the head, or the editor needs to find a new job. The first addition of this text had errors too, but the second edition only got worse. To bad for me, I haven't yet found another text book that covers this information to the degree needed in a classroom setting. Maybe next time the editor will be awake while he/she is working.
